New Portrait Miniature Hardcover Book

Roger and Carmela Arturi Phillips have published a hardcover catalogue of their portrait miniature collection, THE ARTURI PHILLIPS COLLECTION: A Catalogue of Portrait Miniatures. Charles Willson Peale and The Mammoth Bones

Portrait miniature enthusiasts are used to hearing about Charles Willson Peale as one of the early premier miniaturists in the United States, whose miniatures can fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction.  Another facet of the man is revealed in this children’s book, called The Mystery of The Mammoth Bones, by James Gilbin, based on true-life events in Peale’s life. A review from “Publisher’s Weekly” summarizes the story:

“With the pacing of an ace detective, Giblin unveils the painstaking steps in artist and naturalist Charles Willson Peale’s 1801 discovery of mammoth bones. Through a third-person narration of Peale’s experience, Giblin establishes these fossils’ revolutionary importance to science, technology and social history, beginning with Peale’s exploratory digs, his assemblage of the first skeleton and its subsequent exhibition and controversy. Maryalice Huggins worked for Israel Sacks, Inc, as well as a few large auction houses, and was well-versed in the high-end world of antiques—that is, until her detective work takes her down hidden passages that lead to encounters with such luminaries as Leigh and Leslie Keno, who don’t come off too well, as well as various experts from Christies and Sothebys. Huggins has a frank and pragmatic approach to the often conflicting advice and information she is given by the so-called scholars and experts, and takes a keen-eyed “question everything” approach which results in several fresh nuggets of academic research.

The history of the American family that apparently owned the piece in the 19th century is a mesmerizing story in its own right, and readers who’ve researched the artists, sitters, and owners of their own antiques will identify with her journey into the past.

19th Century Book on How to Paint Portrait Miniatures

1An interesting antique book listed for sale by Joslin Hall (eBay #350261836194) gives detailed instructions on how to paint miniatures. It appears to have three female authors. The listing is as follows:

Nouveau Manuel complet de Miniature, de Gouache, du Lavis a la Sepia, de l’Aquarelle et de la Peinture a la Cire, par Mm. Constant-Viguier, Langlois-Longueville et Duroziez.  Published in Paris by La Libraire Encyclopedique Roret: 1845. Nouvelle edition.

First published in 1828, this treatise on miniature and watercolor painting includes instructions for preparing and painting on ivory, glass, concave and black glass and other materials, creating and outlining designs, gives suggestions for colors and mediums and discusses subject matter and effects, thoroughly going over every technical and artistic aspect of the subjects. One of the plates illustrates a painter’s kit, with paintbox, brushes, suggested set ups for the palette and a hand-colored color wheel. The other plate illustrates how to effectively chose and frame a view from a natural landscape, including dealing with its geometric elements. A charming manual.

Softcover. 4″x6″, viii + 356 pages plus 2 folding plates, one with an attractive hand-colored color wheel. Publisher’s original printed paper covers, covers with some chipping around the edges, spine reinforced with what appears to be an onionskin paper (see photo). A little toning and spotting throughout, page tips and fore-edge a bit browned, etc. Last gather of text pages and the first plate still attached into the binding by their cords, but very, very loosely. Still, an attractive copy in the publisher’s original paper covers.”

Booker Prize Long-list: Wolf Hall, a novel of Henry VIII’s time

A Collector’s Frenzy

Here is a good summary of the book An Orchid Thief  by Susan Orlean (@susanorlean on Twitter)–which was later made into a film starring Meryl Streep–including a quote that captures the frenzy of collectors:

Orchidelirium is the name the Victorians gave to the flower madness that is for botanical collectors the equivalent of gold fever. Wealthy orchid fanatics of that era sent explorers (heavily armed, more to protect themselves against other orchid seekers than against hostile natives or wild animals) to unmapped territories in search of new varieties of Cattleya and Paphiopedilum. As knowledge of the family Orchidaceae grew to encompass the currently more than 60,000 species and over 100,000 hybrids, orchidelirium might have been expected to go the way of Dutch tulip mania. Yet, as journalist Susan Orlean found out, there still exists a vein of orchid madness strong enough to inspire larceny among collectors.

The Orchid Thief centers on south Florida and John Laroche, a quixotic, charismatic schemer once convicted of attempting to take endangered orchids from the Fakahatchee swamp, a state preserve. Laroche, a horticultural consultant who once ran an extensive nursery for the Seminole tribe, dreams of making a fortune for the Seminoles and himself by cloning the rare ghost orchid Polyrrhiza lindenii. Laroche sums up the obsession that drives him and so many others:

“I really have to watch myself, especially around plants. Even now, just being here, I still get that collector feeling. You know what I mean. I’ll see something and then suddenly I get that feeling. It’s like I can’t just have something–I have to have it and learn about it and grow it and sell it and master it and have a million of it.”

Even Orlean–so leery of orchid fever that she immediately gives away any plant that’s pressed upon her by the growers in Laroche’s circle–develops a desire to see a ghost orchid blooming and makes several ultimately unsuccessful treks into the Fakahatchee. Filled with Palm Beach socialites, Native Americans, English peers, smugglers, and naturalists as improbably colorful as the tropical blossoms that inspire them, this is a lyrical, funny, addictively entertaining read. –Barrie Trinkle, from Amazon.
