It’s been just over a year since Saturday Night Live dubbed Charlotte the “gateway to Gastonia” — they might have been right. Monster Mini Golf opened a location in the University area in March 2021, and a new location will open later this year – in Gastonia.
Each Monster Mini Golf location offers indoor entertainment including arcade games, mini bowling, laser maze and miniature golf.
But not just any miniature golf course. Each course has its own monster-themed animated art and black lights, providing a spooky and surprising glow in the dark putt-putt experience for guests.
The owners are considering an opening date of mid-2022 for the Gastonia site. Individual mini-golf games start at $10, and three-month passes — which include unlimited mini-golf for two, $10 arcade credit and more perks — cost $99. Monster Mini Golf offers food, beverages, private event space, and multiple birthday packages to accommodate kids and parents.
Mini golf is growing
Mini golf is making a comeback, but it’s not always your grandfather’s mini golf. Stroke opened in Plaza Midwood in 2020 and Puttery opened in South End last year. Both indoor mini-golf attractions cater to millennials — with a focus on cocktails and an age restriction of 21 and older for some or all of their opening hours.
Monster Mini Golf evolved from mini golf which millennials also grew up in. You’re hard-pressed to find a Putt-Putt Fun Center, though the chain that started in Fayetteville in 1954 dotted North Carolina with locations throughout the ’90s. Animal statues and an adorable mascot of orange golf ball often identified these places which were often empty in the winter and filled with sweaty children (and tired parents) throughout the summer.
Monster Mini Golf operates nearly 30 locations across the United States and Canada. The University location is open seven days a week.
