Jules Verne may have penned the classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, but now a British photographer has created his own hilarious take on what life below the waves could entail.

Underwater photographer, Jason Isley, 42, from Essex, decided to have a little fun for a change with some of the smaller colorful reef fish from Borneo and Indonesia.

So he got a selection of toy human figures ranging from soldiers to bathers and photographed them in a series of hilarious scenes as they interacted with fish and other sea creatures.

Jason felt underwater macro (close-up) photography was starting to get cliched and thought he would create his underwater scenarios to entertain but also give a different perspective of the seabed.

Some of the tiny figures are shown wearing protective gear as they investigate all sorts of curious crustaceans and odd-looking anemones.

And a troop of toy soldiers take up arms against a variety of threats including a spooky Bobbit worm and a blue-ringed octopus.

Other characters are seen relaxing on lounge chairs as a variety of unusual sea creatures lurk nearby.

Jason said, “Most of the scenes are shot on sand and the characters have nails or coins stuck to their feet. This prevents current and surges from washing them away, not to mention fish catching them multiple times.

“I wanted to take them underwater and photograph them with living subjects that would create a really surreal scene.

“I’ve been working on the project for almost a year, but each image usually takes an entire dive which can last between 50 and 90 minutes depending on the depth.

“The response has been tremendous, people who dive instantly recognize the subjects and understand the meaning, other people are amazed when they learn that the photos were taken underwater with live subjects.”
