Before the 44th Chess Olympiad kicked off, a miniature artist from Coimbatore designed a 1.5 inch miniature chessboard using silver and 2 grams of gold in just 2 hours.

Talking about this miniature chess board, he said: I want to teach children about the traditional chess game called chaduranga. It is a traditional game and now it is a proud moment for the people of Tamil Nadu that the 4th Chess Olympiad is taking place in Chennai.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the world’s biggest chess event, the 44th International Chess Olympiad at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Thursday.

It is due to take place from July 28 to August 10 in the village of Poonjeri in Mamallapuram.

In view of Modi’s visit, the Greater Chennai Police have put in place a five-tier security arrangement and deployed 22,000 personnel. The flight of drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles was banned within the city limits on July 28 and 29 under Article 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
