The PN and ADPD candidates running in the 5th constituency have established their position on the plans for a miniature airstrip which currently threaten the pristine valley of Wied Żnuber, while all the PL candidates interviewed do not didn’t even respond.
Candidates who took the time to respond all spoke out against the plans, saying a more suitable location for such plans can certainly be found.
Għaqda Storja u Kultura Birżebbuġa, Moviment Graffitti, BirdLife Malta and Din l-Art Ħelwa sent the following question to the PL, PN and ADPD candidates: Do you agree that the area of Wied Żnuber where there is a planned miniature airstrip for model airplanes, currently administered by INDIS Malta Ltd., become a designated ODZ to secure its future as unbuilt land?
All PN and ADPD candidates agreed with residents and organizations‘ proposal to designate this area as ODZ so that it remains undeveloped. Not all PL candidates took a clear position by answering “yes” or “no” to the question.
The project of an airstrip through the valley and the cliffs of the region was announced last month during the signing of an agreement between the government agency INDIs and an association of model airplanes.
Residents, Birżebbuġa local council and other stakeholders were not consulted on these plans, and the plans for the airstrip are secret until this day.
Recent statements by the Prime Minister that no development will occur inside Wied Żnuber and that part of the area around it may become ODZ have failed to allay fears over the development of the airstrip since the plan was not withdrawn.
You can find the candidates’ full responses here.
Residents and organizations will gather in the parish square of Birżebbuġa at 6 p.m. for a symbolic activity in favor of the protection of Wied Żnuber and its surroundings.
